Introduction to Stutz and the Neflix documentary with Jonah Hill.
Not seen it? Wow. I watched it twice and I urge you to watch it at least once.
Someone who knows I love all things personal and professional development recommended it to me.
The tools that psychiatrist and therapist Stutz has created are easy to adopt and use in your own life. What's quite remarkable is the relationship between Stutz and Hill. This is a warm, emotive, thought provoking and quite gripping documentary.
Phil Stutz has Parkinson's. He has agreed to Jonah Hill making a documentary about him, his work and his life to capture the essence of his incredible visual tools. Stutz draws little line diagrams to illustrate each of his tools. The wit, humour and emotions within the processes they explore and the challenges in Jonah's life that Stutz has helped him to tackle is just enthralling.

In the quest for personal growth and resilience, renowned therapist Phil Stutz offers a unique approach through his transformative coaching tools. These tools empower individuals to navigate life’s complexities, overcome obstacles, and unlock their latent potential.
Let’s delve into Stutz’s powerful methods and explore how they can shape your mindset and change your life.
The Tools: A Framework for Change
Stutz formulated what he calls “the tools”—specific visualisation and mindset exercises that address specific issues. These tools are not passive; they actively change your inner state in real time. Let’s explore some of these tools, including a few of my own personal favourites:
Coaches shouldn’t be neutral or passive - people need to be told what to do and how to do it
Tools should change your inner state in real time and give you the opportunity to visualise how something could feel in your mind
True confidence is learning to live in uncertainty
Secret of life is accepting that you’ll never figure it out
The Guide, The Hero, and The Villain
The Guide: Imagine a coach who brings you the tools. This guide represents the active role coaches and consultants should play—providing guidance and direction.
The Hero: That’s you! Embrace your journey and face challenges head-on.
The Villain: Obstacles and doubts that hinder progress. Recognise them as essential for growth.
Living in Uncertainty
True confidence lies in accepting uncertainty. Life is unpredictable, and that’s okay.
The secret of life? Accept that you’ll never have all the answers.
Aspects of Reality
Pain and uncertainty are constants. Acknowledge them and learn from them.
Life Force
Nurture your body, relationships, and mental health. Set goals for personal development.
You have to look after your body - physical health, people - your relationships, and yourself - mental health and having goals and aspirations to focus on for our own personal development
Embracing Villains
Villains—those who doubt us—are necessary for growth.
Love the process of development and live in the moment.
The Shadow
The negative traits we’re ashamed of. Connect with your shadow and integrate it into your life.
This is a result of believing the negative thoughts in Part X - it’s the part of you - the negative traits you’re ashamed of. You have to connect with the shadow, listen to it and include it in your life and not be ashamed of it anymore, stop letting that limiting belief hold you back.
Inner Authority
Is about making decisions for yourself
Helps us to make a choice by ourselves about whether something is right for us.
Make decisions for yourself. Trust your judgment.
The Snapshot
Stop chasing perfection. Focus on progress and enjoy the journey.
We waste so much time chasing perfection that really doesn’t exist. Worry less about
finding that and more about simply moving forwards and enjoying the process.
Escaping the Maze
The past can trap us. Move forward by letting go.
The maze keeps us trapped in the past and stops us from moving forwards.
The Work
Active Love: Visualize love and acceptance toward situations that anger you.
We often seek a fair and balanced outcome from a person or situation but we can only get that from ourselves. You can get that outcome from this exercise by visualising the situation you are angry about and channeling love and acceptance towards it. If you can’t you’ll be stuck in the past (the maze) and never be able to move forwards.
Radical Acceptance: Acknowledge reality without anger or avoidance.
This is about learning to accept things about yourself, others and the world rather than getting angry. It’s about learning to live with them. It is also about acknowledging these things rather than ignoring them, avoiding them or wishing they were different.
Acceptance allows you to move forwards and get so much more out of life (squeezing the lemon)
Grateful Flow: Practice gratitude to combat negativity.
Practice gratitude in order to cut through a black cloud of negative or intrusive thoughts. When you feel down, think about all the things you are grateful for and take a moment to be mindful.
Part X
We are and always will be surrounded by villains who create self doubt and tell us things are impossible and put obstacles in our way. We need these villains to grow, develop and move forwards. We have to learn to love the process of development and live in the moment
Conclusion
Phil Stutz’s coaching tools offer a fresh perspective on personal growth.
By embracing uncertainty, acknowledging our shadows, and actively using these tools, we can transform problems into possibilities. What would happen if you stepped into the role of the hero, faced your villains, and unlocked your true potential—one tool at a time? 🌟
